Taj is an Indian restaurant that was under my radar for awhile, when I found out about it I have been wanting to try it for a while and tonight was my night. I did some research about this place and from what I found out they serve food from a different part of India. This food here is more Northern Indian / Pakistani although they do sell some of the more familiar Southern Indian food as well.
Today I came with two friends. My eating partner Tammy and her sister Kim. Tammy and I have been to several Indian places around the area and she is used to the flavors. I did tell her that the food is different. Kim has never had Indian food before, so it was a new experience for her.
We were greeted and seated quickly and our drink orders were taken. We then started looking at the buffet to see what they had to offer. I was pleased that Tammy’s favorite Brit-Indian dish was there; Chicken Tikka Masala. I also had a few choices as well. I saw some different items on the buffet like fried onion balls, and they also had samosas on their buffet. I filled my plate with several items like the eggplant, spring rolls, and rice.
Tammy got some Chicken tikka masala on lemon rice along with naan, sambusa and other items. Kim also got chicken tikka masala, some lamb, rice, lentil soup, and other items. She didn’t want anything too spicy, and except for one item that was labeled spicy everything was mildly spiced.
Everything on the buffet looked to be fresh. It was a smaller buffet than the other places we have tried but but all the favorites were there. There was someone constantly tending the buffet and nothing looked like it was not fresh. Their chicken for the tikka masala had nice big ~3 ounce pieces. It was well cooked and the chicken was tender from what I could tell.
Tammy liked everything there. She did go back for seconds and although nothing was terrible, she did mention to me that the other Indian places we have had in the area she liked them better than Taj. I tend to agree. Everything tasted good, there was nothing that I flat out disliked but everything was a bit too mildly spiced for me. There was nothing I ate that made my nose run, and I am used to having more choices. There was a few things that was missing, that I missed having with my food like the crispy lentil poppadom.
As I mentioned earlier this was Kim’s first time eating Indian. She really loved it. She loved the food, the waiter, and the atmosphere of the place. She really liked the chicken tiki masala, the rices she tried, and she thought the lamb was really delicious. It was tender and cooked well. She can’t wait to come back.
If you have tried Indian food, but thought it to be a bit too spicy, or have never tried it and want an introduction Taj might be the place for you. The food is good, well cooked, just on the mild side but not mild enough that it is bland. The service is friendly and attentive. They do have a full menu, but the buffet is recommended if you have never had Indian before so you can sample several things to see what you like.
